For children and youth living in poverty in Colombia, having an education could change everything.

However, just providing access to schooling is not enough. To really eradicate poverty, it is necessary to go Beyond Education.

Children born into low-income communities are often raised believing that their hardship is a condition they can’t ever change, so they see poverty as an external circumstance totally outside their control.

At Beyond Education, Our vision is to eradicate poverty from the inside-out in the most vulnerable children & youth.

Our beneficiaries and their families get empowered to change their reality by changing their mentality!

But we don’t stop there.

What makes us truly transformational is the way we do it.

Our mission is to upskill underprivileged children & youth in Colombia by connecting them with paid opportunities, so they can kick off their entrepreneurial journey or get employed and break their poverty cycle.

Beyond Education has designed a curriculum in which learners receive support to ensure their permanence in school, as they build their life envisioning projects and learn skills that prepare them for a successful professional future.

As our learners grow with us, they also learn that they can make a difference in their individual stories, the story of their families, their community, their country, and ultimately, the world.

How it started

In 2018 Our Founder, Daniela Zapata Alzate, enlisted as an AIESEC volunteer to work in Nairobi, Kenya. Daniela taught a community of children in Kibera, the second-largest slum in Africa.

The experience showed Daniela that while education should be a Universal Human Right, in reality, it is a privilege for children born into poor families.

Daniela’s students in Kibera faced numerous obstacles in addition to a lack of access to formal education. Problems such as domestic violence and sexual abuse were not uncommon among the children, making their education all the more necessary.

Although her volunteering in Kenya was shocking for Daniela, it motivated her and generated a vital reconnection between her and her life purpose.

This experience, combined with her work at Mindvalley and her personal growth, helped her understand that practices such as mindfulness, developing conscious habits, and life-visioning can be taught from early childhood, and can make a huge difference in a child’s future.

Daniela created Beyond Education with the support of her family and close friends, with the clear purpose of transforming the reality of Colombian children, through an integral pedagogical proposal.
